Some things are better left unsaid, President Duterte said Thursday in sharing his view on whether honesty should be an issue in this year’s midterm elections.

The President admitted that being honest “depends” on the situation, saying it could “create trouble” for a person hanging by a thread.

“It depends. It depends. If you’re hanging by the thread of what good use would it be, if it just creates trouble,” he said when asked if honesty should be a poll issue.

“There are things left unsaid and there are things which you can answer correctly,” he added.

The President’s daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio earlier said honesty should not be an issue in the elections since everybody lies anyway.

After her controversial comment drew criticisms from some groups, the mayor explained that she was  trying to help the opposition candidates  “dig themselves out of their own hole.” She reportedly said the opposition candidates should not attack their rivals about honesty since they themselves were liars.
