Phil. Army marks 122nd Founding Anniversary; 15 awardees honoured

The Philippine Army (PA) honored on Thursday (March 21, 2019) 15 awardees in recognition of their bravery and exemplary performance during the Army’s 122nd Founding Anniversary program at Ricarte Hall, Philippine Army Officers Clubhouse, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

Three soldiers were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Star (DCS) while four others were awarded the Gold Cross Medal (GCM). The DCS, the second highest military award, is given to soldiers for their conspicuous acts of courage and gallantry in the face of an armed and fierce enemy while the GCM is for gallantry in action.

The Distinguished Conduct Star awardees were Sgt. Arnel S. Alberto, Cpl. Roel P. Delos Reyes, and Pvt. Jerry N. Wassig. The Gold Cross Medal awardees were 1st Lt. Francis F. Hernaez, 1st Lt. William S. Hiponia, 1st Lt. Antonio M. Cortes Jr., and Staff Sgt. Juljiri M. Abdurajik.

The other awardees were Staff Sgt. Ramil G. Binoya, CAFGU Active Auxiliary Andrito C. Libradilla, Ms. Rosemarie O. Vilbar, Ms. Modest Joydalyn M. Reyes, Lt. Col. Suharto T. Mangudadatu, Pfc. Sherwin Cesar Adame, Cadet Lt. Col. Lester Vic C. Delima, and Cadet 1st Lt. Jovelyn B. Sambo. They all each received a command plaque.

Sgt. Arnel S. Alberto from the Light Reaction Regiment exemplified his courage as a Stack Leader and Acting Platoon Sergeant of LRR during the assault of a known enemy sniper position inside a building at Barangay Daguduban, Marawi City, on July 1, 2017 during the conduct of a series of sustained urban combat operations from May 31 to Oct. 16, 2017 against local and foreign terrorists from Maute and Abu Sayyaf Group.

Cpl. Roel P. Delos Reyes from the 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division served as a machine gunner during the attack of more or less 80 fully armed local terrorists at Brgy. Poblacion Bayabao, Butig, Lanao del Sur on Feb. 20, 2016. Reyes risked his life despite threats of enemy snipers in four positions in order to deliver gun fires towards the enemy that prevented them to overrun their patrol base.

Pvt. Jerry N. Wassig of the First Scout Ranger Regiment served as a tail scout of the 1st Platoon of the FSRR during an encounter against more or less 10 Islamic State-inspired Maute Terrorists at Building 633 in Marawi City on Sept. 10, 2017. He crawled inside a sewer upon seeing that his commanding officer was hit and his team leader’s condition was at risk. He rescued them despite heavy gun fires and retrieved all their firearms. With his bravery, he was able to bring his commanding officer to safety and saved the life of his team leader.

First Lt. Francis F. Hernaez of 10th Infantry “Agila” Division served as a Platoon leader of Scout Platoon of 10th ID against an undetermined number of fully armed members of Guerilla Front 25 at Sitio Tadya, Brgy. Bantacan, New Bataan, Compostella Valley Province on January 20, 2018.

First Lt. William S. Hiponia of the 9th Infantry “Spear” Division led the 1st squad of Bravo Company 9th ID during an encounter against more or less 15 armed Communist NPA terrorist in Brgy. Payak, Bato, Camarines Sur on April 10, 2018.

First Lt. Antonio M. Cortes Jr. from Mechanized Infantry Division was tasked as the Platoon Leader of MID during the conduct of Joint Law Enforcement Operation at Brgy. Lumba Punod Pantar, Lanao del Sur on Feb. 8, 2018.

Staff Sgt. Juljiri M. Abdurajik from the 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division who was the Platoon Sergeant of Bravo Company of the 4th ID, fought against around 40 CNTs at Sitio Ulayanon, Brgy. Kalabuyao, Impasusog, Bukidnon on Apr. 14, 2018.

The Philippine Army honors its personnel who displays extraordinary courage in the performance of their duties and in doing ordinary things extraordinarily.
