AFP: Desperate Abus losing space, resources

An Abu Sayyaf terrorist was killed while another was wounded in an encounter that took place between the terrorist group and government troops in Simusa Island, Municipality of Banguingui on Monday.

The Philippine Marine Ready Force Sulu (PMRFS) Marine Battalion Landing Team 3 engaged the terrorists ASG under a certain Najir Arik in a firefight which transpired at about 11:44 a.m. on Monday when the terrorists were trying to get potable water.

The five-minute clash resulted in one ASG terrorist being killed, and one wounded and eventually captured by the Marines.

The captured ASG was immediately given first aid and was subsequently evacuated by helicopter to Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital for treatment.

Earlier, PMRFS troops under Marine Battalion Landing Team 1 engaged the ASG in a firefight that resulted in the death of one Marine.

Brig. Gen. Divino Rey Pabayo Jr., Commander of Joint Task Force (JTF) Sulu, reiterated his appreciation of the support of the local populace.

"The people of Simusa Island will soon be able to live in peace," Pabayo said.

He further praised the gallantry and perseverance of the Philippine Marines who are continuously doing their duty to bring about peace in the area.
