Sr. Supt. Bernard Banac, spokesman of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the shootout happened after suspect Thong Maido sensed that he was dealing with a policeman in a supposed drug transaction in Barangay Lipao at around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

“The suspect was killed during the shootout. The two wounded policemen were taken to the hospital for treatment,” said Banac.

He identified the wounded as PO2 Winston Arellano and PO1 Jeffrey Banzon, both assigned to the Municipal Drug Enforcment Team of Datu Paglas police.
Maido was killed in the encounter.

Seized from the slain suspect were a .45 pistol, four sachets of shabu, a motorcycle and the marked money used during the transaction.

More than 5,000 suspected drug pushers and users have been killed in various police operations since July 2016 across the country. Thousands more have been killed by suspected vigilante groups.

On the other hand, more or less 200 policemen have either been wounded or killed in the aggressive anti-drugs operations.
