CAMP GEN. PANTALEON GARCIA, IMUS, Cavite – A another inmate in police custody in Dasmariñas has died after he complained of body pains and breathing difficulty.

Police Lito Pasivi Penaflorida, a 58-year-old construction worker detained on drug charges, died of septic shock, pneumonia and gastroentestinal bleeding, a doctor at the Pagamutan ng Dasmariñas, was quoted as saying.

Penaflorida was the fifth sickly inmate to have died at the city jail in a month.

SPO1 Elmo Caboboy, case investigator, said Penaflorida was arrested last February.

Jail inmate deaths have been reported in Dasmarinas, Bacoor, Imus, General Trias.

At least 30 detainees from jails in the four districts and other areas have died from different causes since October.

The jails are overcrowded and lack adequate ventilation. Congestion and heat exhaustion have been blamed for the deaths of sickly inmates.

Relatives of detainees and observers fear that the number of deaths will rise further during the summer season.

Those detained in the jails have not been convicted yet and awaiting either court hearing/trial or case promulgation.
