Huawei’s latest budget offering Huawei Y6 Pro (2019) has got people buzzing especially due to the recent success of its predecessor, the Huawei Y6 2018. Y6 Pro sure did enter the smartphone’s competitive entry-level category with loaded arsenal, and bigger specs. Getting a hold of this phone makes you lose the idea that it’s budget-priced.
An initial impression I had on this device is how lightweight it felt as I held it. Despite hitting all the markers on Huawei’s signature look, even looking like the higher-end ones, the Y6 Pro just weighs 150 g. It may seem like it needs more substantial feel to it, but the device lets its actions speak for itself. Besides, its weight makes it a breeze to handle.
The 6.09” screen is all bezel, with the dewdrop notch on top housing the front camera, as the device uses on-screen navigation buttons. It has a resolution of 720 x 1560 pixels with ~282 ppi density. With its screen brightness on its fullest, the screen display is blinding – I meant, the good type of blinding. There is also no space for a fingerprint scanner, but the Y9 Pro comes equipped with a facial recognition security feature.
Huawei Y6 Pro runs on Andoid 9.0 (Pie) and EMUI 9. For all things under the hood, the Y6 Pro has Mediatek MT6761 Helio A22 (12 nm) chipset, and Quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU making it of value for its price. It has 3,020 MAH battery.
Bigger than before, the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 has 32 GB of storage and 3 GB of RAM compared to the Huawei Y6 2018 with just 2GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. And Huawei lessens the hassle brought by pre-installed applications with its Extendable Read-Only File System or EROFS technology. This feature is designed for ROM optimizing by compressing the pre-installed files and applications into smaller sizes, which in turn lets you maximize your storage. Besides, if the storage still is not enough for you, you can expand the memory of te Y6 Pro for up to 512 GB.
Huawei also introduced Huawei Supersound in the Y6 Pro with additional 6db of sound with stronger bass effects which in itself serves no need for a third party speaker device.
Heading over to the security feature, you can choose from PIN code or facial recognition. And possibly my favorite thing about this device is how easily it enrolled my facial features, it literally took only a second to register my face. And with its ‘pick up to wake’ feature, unlocking the Y6 Pro did not need to be a full-time job.
Huawei Y6 Pro went easy on the cameras by having only one 13MP main shooter, and 8MP selfie camera. It also chose the minimalistic approach with its main camera by taking away all the fancy bells and whistles from its features. As for the beauty camera, it did not go over the top which I must say is refreshing to look at. A break from all the overly-filtered beauty cameras of other, even higher-end, phones. The Y6 Pro shoots videos at 1080p@30fps, and comes with a LED flash for both the front and back cameras.
The Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 comes in colors Midnight Black and Sapphire Blue which thanks to its glitter sparkle, gives the same feel as the elegant higher-end Huawei smartphones. Its 2.5D curved glass screen also adds to it.
With Huawei Y6 Pro 2019, you are definitely getting what you have paid for, and maybe even more. Huawei considers the Y6 Pro as their “entry-level game changer”, and I’m telling you: it just might be.
