Leader of gun-for-hire gang killed in shootout

TAYABAS CITY, Quezon – The alleged leader of a gun-for-hire and robbery hold-up gang was killed in a shootout with the intelligence agents of the Quezon Provincial Police Office (QPP0) Friday morning.

A bus passenger was also injured by a stray bullet in the same encounter at Barangay Isabang, this city.

Meanwhile, two members of the gang were arrested while one managed to escape from the scene.

Senior Superintendent Osmundo de Guzman, QPPO director, identified the alleged gang leader who was killed as Rex Salidaga Borinaga, alias Burdado, alleged leader of the Burdado robbery hold up and gun-for-hire group. He is a resident of Sitio Maruhi, Brgy. Pinagbayanan, Pagbilao town.

Police identified the two who were arrested as Armindo Banayado Ormacido, 58, and a resident of Sun Ridge Subdivision, and Virgilio Tagle Fontiler, 63, construction worker. Both are residents of Brgy Isabang. Police said the man who escaped was only known as “Bubot.”

De Guzman said the incident started at about 10 a.m when the Quezon Intelligence operatives and Tayabas City police accosted Borinaga and his group who were walking along the road with their waists’ bulging with what appeared to be guns.

A police report related that when the men saw the lawmen approaching, Borinaga and Bubot pulled out their firearms and shot at the police who retaliated. Borinaga was felled by a bullet while his companions escaped.

Police later arrested Ormacido and Fontiler during a pursuit operation. The police confiscated from their possession were a homemade caliber .38 loaded with five ammunition, and a hand grenade.
