Assorted unlicensed firearms were handed over to the Army’s 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion from the municipality of Ampatuan, Maguindanao, on Thursday, February 14, 2019.
2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Alvin G. Iyog received 26 high and low powered firearms coming from the local residents of the towns’ 11 barangays.
The firearms were handed over through Ampatuan Mayor Rasul Sangki in a formal ceremony held at Ampatuan municipal hall.
The firearms turned over were fourteen 12-gauge shotguns, four caliber .38 revolver, an M203 grenade launcher, two caliber 45 pistol, a 12-gauge pistol, two M79 grenade launchers, an M1 Garrand rifle, and a 60mm mortar.
“We are very happy that the local government unit of Ampatuan through the initiative of Mayor Sangki pushed for handing over loose firearms that contributed to the peace and order of the municipality especially during the election period,” Iyog said.
“The firearms presented to us, will be a great help in reduction of criminalities and violence in the communities,” he added.
Maj. Gen. Cirilito E. Sobejana, Commander of Joint Task Force Central and 6th Infantry Division, encouraged other municipalities under his jurisdiction to surrender their remaining unlicensed firearms to achieve lasting peace and order in Central Mindanao. (Francis T. Wakefield)
