5.5 magnitude tremor hits NL

SINAIT, Ilocos Sur - A 5.5 magnitude tremor rocked some areas in Northern Luzon late Thursday afternoon but it did not cause any damage to properties, according to the local office of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) here.

The earthquake occurred at 4:34 p.m. with the epicenter located at 26 kilometer southwest of Calayan, Cagayan and a depth of 27 kilometers.

Intensity 5 was felt in Calayan, Cagayan; intensity 4 in Aparri, Claveria and Pamplona, all in Cagayan province; Laoag City, Adams, Bacarra, Bangui, Batac City, Currimao, Dingras, Pagudpud, Pasuquin, San Nicolas and Vintar, all in Ilocos Norte; intensity 3 in Alcala, Cagayan; Cervantes and Sinait, both in Ilocos Sur; intensity 2 in Peñablanca, Cagayan; and intensity 1 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin. Aftershocks are expected.
