DAVAO CITY – Opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV was surprised with the kind of treatment he got from the people of the city, even if he was declared persona non grata by the city council last year.

Trillanes said Dabawyenyos were “surprisingly warm” to him as arrived in the city around 5 a.m. January 15 for the arraignment of his four libel cases filed by presidential son Paolo Duterte and brother-in-law Manases Carpio.

“Sa akin kasi, I still believe lahat tayo mga Pilipino, yung iba nakaka intindi sa ginagawa ko so maganda yung pagsalubong (For me, I still believe that we are all Filipino, so those who understand what I am doing gave me a nice welcome),” he said.

The senator said he also understood those people who were opposing his being a staunch critic of Duterte because “ the Philippines is a democratic country.”

He said his opposition to the government was the essence of democracy in the country.

Trillanes was escorted by elements of Regional Mobile Force Battalion 11 from Davao International Airport going to the Regional Trial Court Branch 54 on Candelaria Street.

At the RTC Branch 54 building, personnel of Talomo Police Station secured the perimeter while he was inside the court.

Trillanes said he will be returning to the city to face the trial of the charges filed against him.
