Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle made the announcement last January 12, during the second day of the Novena Masses at the Tondo Church for the Feast of the Santo Nino which will be marked on January 20. The formal rite for the declaration of the parish as an archdiocesan shrine will be held during a mass to be presided by Tagle on February 5.

Tagle said the elevation stemmed from the petition of Tondo parish priest Rev. Fr. Estelito Villegas and the local community. “Shrines are places of special devotion of the faithful to a particular title of Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Mother, and the saints,” he said.

“We grant to the said Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Niño all the rights and privileges as embodied in the statutes which we also approve at the same time,” the cardinal said in his decree.

He challenged the parishioners “to be prepared as they embrace their new identity and mission. If that is your identity, that is also your mission. Along with your identity is becoming a missionary for evangelization,” Tagle stressed.
