TAGBILARAN CITY – Police on Tuesday were still figuring out the motive behind the ambush attempt on a mayoralty candidate in a town in Bohol, which led to the slaying of the candidate’s driver.

SPO Roel Lagura of the Getafe Police Station said Buenavista town mayoralty candidate Rico Cabarrubias and his driver were ambushed last Monday afternoon by unidentified gunmen.

The candidate was able to escape but his driver, Conrado Aniasco, sustained gunshot wounds and died.

The ambush was carried out along the national highway in Barangay Tulang near the boundary of Getafe and Talibon towns. Lagura said the area was relatively remote.

Cabarrubias is running for mayor under the banner of Padayon Bol-anon, the local coalition aligned with the provincial administration of Gov. Edgar Chatto.
The police are still determining if the incident is election-related. (Dave Albarado)
