“Devotion helps deepen a person’s faith because it is an expression of trust as well as a stronger and deeper spiritual affiliation with our Creator,” a Catholic priest said.

Following the generally peaceful observance of the Traslacion of the Black Nazarene, Rev. Fr. Edgar P. Tubio, rector and parish priest of the Minor Basilica of San Sebastian in Quiapo, Manila said, the devotees of the Black Nazarene “showed genuine faith and trust in God during the long and tedious procession.”

“Devotion helps in strengthening a person’s faith. It is an expression of faith,” Tubio said over Church-run Radio Veritas.

“In joining the procession, the devotees showed how deep their belief and faith in the Lord are as well as their love for the Blessed Mother,” he added.

The traditional Dungaw, wherein the image of the Blessed Mother was brought out of the minor basilica “to welcome” the image of the Black Nazarene as it passes by, was held at the San Sebastian during the Traslacion. “It is a religious courtesy that we inherited from Spain. It is also held in other provinces such as in Quezon, Cebu, and Bohol,” Tubio said.

The Church leader said more than half a million devotees offered prayers and sang the “Ama Namin” during the Dungaw.
