Based on the photos sent by Playa La Caleta Management to the Manila Bulletin, the dolphin had scratches and seemed to have a shark-bite on its body.

A fishing line with hook was also entangled on its tail.

“Maybe two hours ago, a 10 ft. Risso’s dolphin went inside our cove, Playa La Caleta in Morong, Bataan. It had what now seems to be a spear gun wound in the body and fishing line with hook in the tail, evidence of illegal fishing,” said Migs Camacho, owner of the resort, in an email sent at 10:57 a.m. on Jan. 10.

Members of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and Morong Municipality came along with a marine biologist and doctor to help with the rescue, Camacho said.

It was learned that the injured mammal, named “Courage”, is a male Risso’s dolphin, which lives in deep sea.

The dolphin was transported to a marine clinic in Subic for treatment.
