2 dead in Valenzuela road mishap
Two men riding a motorcycle died after they were hit by a bus along MacArthur Highway, Dalandanan, Valenzuela City on Tuesday midnight.
Police identified one of the victims as Jhon Alvin Goyal, 22, resident of Sitio Pangolo, Taytay, Rizal; and the bus driver as Silverio Mejias, 47, resident at Estraño Street, Meycauyan, Bulacan. Police have yet to identify the other victim.
Investigation showed that the victims were traversing MacArthur Highway and were headed towards Monumento.
The bus, which was on the opposite direction, suddenly swerved on the left, hitting and dragging the motorcycle until it crashed at a parking lot.
The unidentified victim, who was a backrider in the motorcycle was declared dead on the spot while Goyal, who was rushed to Valenzuela Medical Center, was declared dead on arrival at about 1:40 a.m.

Wanted professor falls to Mandaluyong police
A tax manager and part-time professor charged with 23 counts of qualified theft were arrested by police inside the university he was teaching at in Mandaluyong City on Monday.
Police identified the suspect as Joel Mendoza, 52, of Barangay San Antonio, Pasig City.
Investigation showed that at around 3:15 p.m. on Monday, members of the Warrant and Subpoena Section of Mandaluyong City police arrested Mendoza inside the university he was teaching at in Barangay Bagong Silang, Mandaluyong.
Police said Hon. Judge Mariam G. Bein of Taguig City Regional Trial Court Branch 153 first issued the arrest warrant of Mendoza for a case of Qualified Theft on April 12, 2017.
Then, another arrest warrant against the suspect was issued on June 16, 2017 by Hon. Judge Elisa R. Sarmiento-Flores of Taguig City Regional Trial Court Branch 266, however this time; Mendoza was facing 22 counts of Qualified Theft.
The suspect currently works as a tax manager for an information technology company and he is also a part-time professor at a university in Mandaluyong, police said.
Senior Supt. Moises Villaceran, Mandaluyong City Police chief, told the Manila Bulletin that the insurance company where Mendoza previously worked, found out that he failed to pay the tax dues of the company even though the money was released.
This prompted the company to file charges against Mendoza who immediately resigned from the company after they discovered the discrepancy, Villaceran said.
The suspect is now detained at the station and the courts will be notified of his arrest. (Jhon Aldrin Casinas)
Driver nabbed after running away with newly-issued cab
A taxi driver was arrested in Manila on Monday afternoon after running away with the vehicle a day after his operator hired him.
Elements of the Manila Police District (MPD)-anti-carnapping unit identified the suspect as James Ronald Otero, 49, resident of Parañaque City.
Investigation showed that Otero was driving the stolen vehicle in front of the headquarters along UN Avenue as they were about to respond to the complaint of taxi operator Cymberline Del Fierro around 5:30 p.m.
Del Fierro, 45, a resident of Gaiety Street, Better Living Subdivision, Parañaque, said Otero was dispatched on December 30, 2018 after the regular driver of one of her taxis failed to report to work.
It was Otero’s first day on the job after he was recommended by Maximo Boltron, Del Fierro’s dispatcher.
However, the suspect never reported back to the company’s office and never communicated again with Boltron.
Records show that Otero was arrested in 2016 for the same offense.
After recording the complaint, the operatives went out of their office to scour the Malate area, where the suspect was last seen as reported by a fellow driver.
It was while they were standing in front of the street when Otero, who was driving the taxi, stopped due to traffic.

Former Marine, one other netted in Pasig drug bust
Two men, including a former Philippine Marine Corps officer, were arrested in a buy-bust operation in Pasig City Monday night.
Chief Insp. Allan Miparanum, Eastern Police District Drug Enforcement Unit (DDEU) chief, identified the suspects as Adonis Alipao, 48; and Dean Natividad, 48, driver—both residents of Barangay Bambang, Pasig City.
Miparanum said that Alipao was a former officer in the Philippine Marine Corps with the rank of corporal.
The DDEU chief added that the suspects were not previously identified and included in the illegal drug watch-list.
Investigation revealed that members of the anti-narcotics team conducted a buy-bust operation against the duo inside their house in Barangay Bambang around 10:30 p.m. on Monday
Police said a police poseur buyer was able to purchase a sachet of suspected shabu from them.
After the transaction was made, policemen hiding near the area quickly swooped in and placed the suspects under arrest.
Recovered from them were six sachets of suspected shabu and the P300 buy-bust money.
A case for violating RA 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 will be filed against the suspects. (Jhon Aldrin Casinas)
Body caught by fishermen off Navotas waters
Instead of finding fish in their nets off the waters of Navotas City, some fishermen caught a tricycle driver's body on Monday evening.
In a police report, a certain Margarete Santos, 26, identified the dead man as her live-in partner, Alberto Segura, 39, resident at R. Fernandez Street, Barangay 153, Tondo, Manila.
Investigation showed that while elements of the Rosalinda 5 fishing boat were fishing on the territorial waters of Navotas, their net trapped the body.
They lifted the body to shore and sought assistance from the Philippine Coast Guard, who forwarded the case to the police.
Cursory examination showed that the victim did not sustain any external injuries.
Santos told the police that she last saw Segura at about 12 noon on Monday.
Police Chief Inspector Aldrin Thompson said the incident may be a case of suicide after it was learned that Segura was anxious about the tricycle that they were still paying off and his tuberculosis.
Segura was arrested before for violating a city ordinance, Santos added.

19 druggies arrested in QC anti-crime ops
At least 19 drug suspects including two brothers were arrested by anti-narcotics team in its simultaneous anti-criminality operations in Quezon City in the past 24 hours.
Members of the drug enforcement unit of Quezon City Police Station 2 arrested brothers Roland Larsen, 51, and Ronald Larsen, 52, and their pal Bernard Hernandez, 41, during a drug sting on the corner of Camarines and Antique Streets in Barangay Ramon Magsaysay.
Anti-illegal drug personnel conducted the drug sting at around 4 p.m. Monday after receiving information that the younger Larsen was included in the Directorate for Intelligence drug watchlist while, Hernandez was a newly-identified drug personality.
Seized from the suspects were five sachets of shabu and the marked money.
Personnel of Talipapa Police Station (PS-3) arrested Juan Miguel, 18, and Dianne Sararana, 22, after officers recovered from them 10 sachets of shabu in a buy-bust at Durian St., Area 9-A, Brgy. Pasong Tamo around 1:25 a.m. Tuesday.
Meanwhile, members of Batasan Police Station (PS-6) anti-narcotics team arrested Michael Ongpauco, 18, and rescued a 16-year-old boy, at about 11:30 p.m. Monday along Capitol Drive corner Tandang Sora Avenue in Brgy. Old Balara.
Police report showed that patrolling officers saw the two men lighting cigarettes in a public place and were supposed to be accosted but they ran and eventually cornered.
When frisked, they yielded a sachet of dried marijuana leaves, a disposable lighter and a glass tube with strains of dried marijuana leaves.
Officers turned over the minor to the Social Services and Development Department of Quezon City.
Same operatives arrested in a buy-bust Adas Makalikod, 52, Carlito Acosta, 43, Tohame Ali, 18, Jay-ar Manguda, 21, and Linda Manguda, 52, all from Brgy. Holy Spirit.
Authorities set a drug sting against the group at No. 17 AFP Road in Brgy. Holy Spirit around 4:30 p.m. Monday where 10 sachets of shabu were recovered from the suspects.
In Barangay Payatas, policemen from PS-6 also nabbed Mark Cervantes, 29, who was included in the police drug watchlist, and Josephine Besas, 38, following a buy-bust at Lupang Pangako, around 10:30 p.m. Monday.
Confiscated from the duo were three sachets of shabu, two disposable lighters, and the buy-bust money.
Meanwhile, the suspect identified as Paul Icasiano Jr., 45, a former drug surrenderer, was arrested anew by personnel of Cubao Police Station (PS-7) during a drug sting at Aurora Boulevard corner Imperial St., Brgy. E. Rodriguez, Cubao around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday after police seized nine sachets of shabu in his possession.
Project 4 Police Station (PS-8) arrested Joselito Deniega, 22, Joshua Ventura, 21, and Shiela Mae Flores, 18, following a buy-bust at Pansol Avenue Barangay Pansol around 2 a.m., Tuesday.
Seized from the suspects were four sachets of shabu.
In Kamuning Police Station (PS-10), a drug suspect identified as Joseph Medina, 19, was arrested by anti-illegal drug operatives during a buy-bust at Monte de Piedad corner Sgt. Catolos, Brgy. Immaculate Concepcion at past 6 p.m., Monday.
Confiscated from him was a sachet of shabu.

Rosary vendor nabbed for homemade gun possession
A rosary vendor was arrested for alleged possession of a homemade gun while police operatives were conducting a clearing operation in preparation for the Black Nazarene feast in Quiapo, Manila on Sunday afternoon.
The police identified the suspect as Peter Coderias, 42, resident of Samadores Luzon Avenue, Old Balara, Quezon City.
Case Investigator PO1 Niel Patrick Galiza of the Manila Police District -Station 3 said the suspect was arrested beside the Quiapo Church along Quezon Boulevard at around 12:50 p.m. on Jan. 6.
Galiza said the police security and K9 handlers in the area noticed a black bag hanging in the right corner of a wall outside Quiapo church during the clearing operation in preparation for the Black Nazarene feast on Jan. 9.
Coderias later admitted he owned the bag and when opened, it yielded a homemade gun and two 12-gauge live ammunition.
He is now facing charges for violation of Republic Act 10591 or Illegal possession of firearm and ammunition before the Manila Prosecutors’ Office. (Erma Edera)
