P80-M worth of agriculture, infrastructure damaged from typhoon 'Karding'

By Francis Wakefield The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) through its Regional DRRM Councils, Tuesday said that close to P80 million worth of damages to infrastructure and agriculture were incurred due to effects of the southwest monsoon enhanced by Tropical Storm "Karding" (international name Yagi).

(MANILA BULLETIN) Undersecretary Ricardo B. Jalad, executive director of NDRRMC and concurrent administrator of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), said the destruction of infrastructure and agriculture in Regions 1, 2, and the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) amounted to P77, 211,275.65. Of this figure, the losses in agriculture totaled P33, 500,000 and P43, 711,275.65 for infrastructure. Jalad said as per reports they received, a total of 414,085 families or 1,676,039 persons were affected in 1,220 barangays in Regions 1, 3, CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), CAR (Cordillera Autonomous Region) and NCR. Of this number, 13,032 families or 58,510 persons are being served inside and outside evacuation centers. Jalad said a total of 111 road sections and one bridge were affected in Regions 1, 2, III, CALABARZON, and CAR. As of August 18, 2018, a total of 87 road sections were reported passable. Close to 2,000 houses were damaged in Regions 1, 3, CALABARZON, and CAR. To date, a total of 435 cities and municipalities in Regions 1, 2, 3, CALABARZON, CAR, and NCR suspended classes in their respective areas. Flood has also subsided in 271 areas as of August 11, 2018. Jalad said a total of P88, 264,600.06 worth of assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), local government units and non-governmental organizations has been provided to Regions 1, 3, CALABARZON, CAR and NCR. He added that as of August 21, 2018, two people were confirmed killed while three people are still missing due to effects of the weather disturbance.
