Members of the 47th Infantry Battalion (IB) were patrolling in Campagao around 5 a.m. when they chanced upon at least 14 armed men, triggering a firefight, said Brig. Gen. Francisco Delfin in a press conference yesterday at the Police Regional Office (PRO)-Central Visayas Headquarters.
The firefight lasted for about 30 minutes before the armed men retreated, said Delfin, assistant commander of 3rd IB.
No casualties were reported during the encounter but two government troopers sustained minor gunshot wounds.
A certain Corporal Campilanos was hit in the right cheek, while one PFC Valota was wounded in the fingers, Delfin said.
A magazine for AK-47 and an Uzi sub-machine gun were recovered in the area.
“We are still identifying the affiliation of the armed group. Bohol has been declared as insurgency-free but we will still check if they are members of the New People’s Army or private armed group. But according to our initial investigation, it is certain that they are not Abu Sayyaf bandits,” said Delfin.
The encounter did not affect the elections in the barangay as winners were proclaimed as early as 2 a.m. yesterday, Delfin added.
Chief Supt. Robert Quenery, director of PRO-7, police will help in the investigation to help identify the armed or what group they are affiliated.
“We will put up a joint command post with the AFP. We will have more checkpoints to intercept the fleeing men or prevent spillovers,” said Quenery.
