“If you are into pageants, you have to choose the contest you’re joining in. Do a background check of the people behind the pageant. So I think that’s one way we can prevent sexual harassment,” says Manuel Genabe III, CEO of Mr. Universe Tourism Philippines Organization, at the signing of the contract for the winners of the Mr. Universe Tourism Philippines 2018 contest, held at Studio A in Quezon City last Friday.

Genabe adds: “There are stories that some sponsors are really courting some of these candidates. But these boys could attest that our relationship to them is like having a son.”

Dr. Jumel Bornilla, president of Mister Universe Tourism Philippines, suggests that the male winners should bring their girlfriends to photo shoots or events so that they will be witnesses to their activities. “At least their girlfriends will have an idea on what really goes on during out-of-town shoots or events.”

Present at the contract signing were Kelvin Aguilan Vicente, Mr. Universe Tourism Philippines 2018; Mark Angelo C. Avila, Gentlemen of the World Philippines; Keanu Fernando, Man of the Year Philippines; Christian Villarin, Mr. Imperial Universe Philippines; Miggy Uchimura, 1st runner-up; and Patrick Santillan Acebo, 2nd runner-up.

Other people behind the Mr. Universe Tourism Organization are Tonett Chua, vice president (VP) for Image and Aesthetics; Michael Sta. Maria, VP for Public Relations and Communications; and Norman Tinio, head of Press Corps. Also at the same event were fashion designers Edwin Uy and Dave Ocampo.

Bornilla says that the Mr. Universe Tourism Philippines is an exclusive all natural-born male, single, never been married nor fathered a child, pageant which promotes sustainable tourism via creating camaraderie among nations.

“The competition’s vision is to be the window of the universe in showcasing the beauty of the participating countries through their respective representatives, each possessing qualities and traits of being courteous, polite, respectful, considerate and honorable, highly distinguished of a real gentlemen, aiming to unite nations via genuine and lifelong brotherhood. The pageant’s third edition is set on May 2019,” he says.
