Margarita Fores has been made “Cavaliere” or honorary Knight of the “Ordine della Stella d’Italia” (Order of the Star of Italy) in a simple “beer, pizza, pasta, and piadine” ceremony Tuesday night at the residence of Italian Ambassador to the Philippines Giorgio Guglielmino at Dasmariñas Village in Makati.
Fores received the distinct civilian honor granted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella on behalf of the Italian state in recognition of her culinary accomplishments and her deep friendship with Italy, by which she has enriched the ties between Italy and the Philippines.
The honor was confered upon Fores by Ambassador Guglielmino. The recipient was also named Asia’s Best Female Chef on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List in 2016. Her decades-long career as a chef, restaurateur, caterer, and culinary genius has mostly specialized in Italian cuisine and its many varieties. In receiving the knighthood, Fores honored her mother, Maria Fores. “Thank you for taking me to Italy when I was 10,” she said. “A love affair started and never ended.”
