BAGUIO CITY – The city has received another composting facility from the Bureau of Soils and Water Management of the Department of Agriculture.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan and General Services Officer Eugene Buyucan accepted the facility composed of a rotary composter and a shredding machine worth P1 million from BSWMN Soil and Water Coordinator for Cordillera Diosdado Jose.

Domogan said the facility will be placed at the Environmental Recycling System (ERS) station at Barangay Irisan along with the first unit earlier donated to the city.

The mayor also signed a memorandum of agreement with BSWM and the DA Regional Field Unit which stipulates that the city should record monthly accomplishment on the progress of operation, production and utilization of the facility.

“The facility is a big help to the city’s waste management program by supplementing the operation of the two ERS machines currently working at maximum capacity of 26 tons per day. The facility can process 500 kilograms of biodegradable wastes in one week.

Buyucan said the fertilizers produced are distributed to requesting barangays and used in the city’s parks.

To use the facility, LGU beneficiaries must have enough raw materials for composting such as vegetable trimmings, overly ripe fruits and other biodegradable materials, readily available source of water and electricity, existing materials recovery facility and are willing to provide counterpart (labor, land and manpower) and are willing to be trained and sustain compost production and its utilization.
