President Duterte has designated Eduardo Año as Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) several months after serving as officer-in-charge (OIC) of the agency.
Año, former chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, took his oath as DILG Secretary before the President in Malacañang Monday, according to Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo.
The retired military general was first appointed DILG Undersecretary on October 26, 2017, the same day he retired from the service.
The President then designated Año as OIC of the DILG in January 2018 to ensure continuous and effective delivery of public service.
A one-year ban prevented Año from assuming the top post of the DILG then. The law states that no retired or resigned military officer or police official may be appointed as Secretary within one year from the date of his retirement or resignation.
“Natapos ito (ban) noon October 26, nag-birthday ako. Timing din opening ng Boracay so kanina ay nakapag-take oath ako kay Presidente bilang full-time Secretary [The ban ended last October 26 when I celebrated my birthday. It also coincided with the opening of Boracay. A while ago, I took my oath before the President as a full-time Secretary],” Año said in a radio interview.
“Although for the last one year, I am functioning as secretary also but now it is a full-fledged Secretary,” he added.
