The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) expressed support to the 29th National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration this October by sponsoring three major contests for students.
CHED, in coordination with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and other government agencies, encourages students, faculty members, and other higher education sector stakeholders to join this year’s celebration of the NSM.
Issuing a statement, CHED said that this event is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 “Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month.” It aims to “promote awareness and to instill appreciation of the importance of statistics to the different sectors of the society and gain the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.”
With theme, “Exploring Philippine Wonders in Numbers: Statistics Towards Sustainable Tourism Development” this year’s NSM is chaired by the PSA. This year’s theme, CHED noted, “reflects the relevance of statistics in achieving a sustainable and progressive tourism growth for our country and emphasizes the need for statistics to identify potential tourism havens and areas which require intervention.”
CHED, as member of the 29th NSM Steering Committee, it will once again sponsor three major competitions for students: 1) Digital Shorts, the 2) Poster-making, and 3) “Kwentong Stats.”
For the “Digital Shorts” contest, aspiring film-makers who wish to join shall produce a three to five-minute short film showing how statistics can be used to promote sustainable tourism development. The entry must be shot using mobile phone or digital camera.
Meanwhile, contenders who wish to participate in CHED poster-making competition shall submit entries using infographics and images that will depict the subject “Exploring Philippine Wonders in Numbers.”
Aspiring writers, on the other hand, are encouraged to join the “Kwentong Stats” short story writing competition by composing an article that will inspire readers in promoting the country’s tourism. Interested student-contestants may inquire with CHED Regional Offices to know more about CHED-sponsored NSM competitions for them.
