Four tectonic quakes shake Surigao del Norte

BUTUAN CITY – Four mild earthquakes shook Surigao del Norte province Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said a 2.4 magnitude tremor was recorded at 5:14 a.m.

The epicenter was plotted 15 kilometers (km) southwest of Malimono town, Surigao del Norte province.

The tremor had a depth of 23 km, it said.

Earlier, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake was also registered at 4:48 a.m. of the same day (Sept. 17). The epicenter was traced 53 km northeast of Burgos town, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte province, with a depth of 20 km, Phivolcs said.

At 3:57 a.m. , a magnitude 2.4 tremor was also recorded and its epicenter was located at 27 km, northwest of Burgos town, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte province, with a shallow depth of only 4 km, the state agency said.

A 1.9 magnitude earthquake was also registered at 1:25 a.m. and its epicenter was traced only 6 km northeast of the town of Burgos, with a depth of 11 km.

The series of earthquakes that struck Surigao del Norte province Monday morning was all tectonic in origin and the stage agency did not raise any tsunami alert.

Meanwhile, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake was also registered at 4:20 a.m. on the same day (Sept. 17) and its epicenter was located 397 km southeast of Caraga, Davao Oriental, with a depth of 33 km, Phivolcs said.
