Malacañang has denounced a priest who prayed in jest for President Duterte to get sick, saying he should better leave the Church.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said the statement of Father Noel Gatchalian wishing someone ill during a mass for Senator Antonio Trillanes IV was disgraceful.

“Kakaiba ‘yan galing sa isang pari. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang pananampalataya ng paring ‘yan pero Kristyano hindi magdadasal para magkasakit ang isang tao [That’s unusual coming from a priest. I don’t the religion of that priest but a Christian would not wish someone to be sick],” Roque said during a press conference in Jordan.

“Nakakahiya ka father. Siguro umalis ka na sa pagiging pari [You’re embarrassing, Father. Maybe you should leave priesthood],” he added.

Gatchalian was delivering a mass outside the office of Trillanes at the Senate when he offered prayers for the President to become ill. He said in jest that Duterte ought to rest since he has often complained of being tired at work.

The mass was held by Gatchalian as Trillanes faced possible arrest following the revocation of the amnesty granted to him for involvement in two military uprisings years ago.

The opposition senator, a known critic of the President, has appealed to the Supreme Court to block Duterte’s Proclamation No. 572 that voided his amnesty for supposedly failure to meet its minimum requirements.
