Vice President Leni Robredo hopes newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Teresita de Castro will be a “unifying figure” to restore public trust in the High Court.
Robredo, a lawyer, said she wants De Castro would be able to use her short stint as Chief Justice to regain the integrity of the SC and strengthen the institution.
(My wish is she will be able to make use of the little time to somehow rebuild people’s trust to the Supreme Court, its integrity),” she said.
Robredo was asked about De Castro’s appointment during a chance interview in the House of Representatives after she attended the budget hearing of the Office of the Vice President.
De Castro’s term will only last for less than two months since she will retire on October 8. She brushed aside her short stint would get in the way of her effectiveness as top magistrate.
Based on seniority, President Rodrigo Duterte appointed De Castro to the SC, which also sits as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal hearing the election protest filed by former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. against Robredo.
The Vice President said it is important for De Castro to strengthen the judicial system.
(It won’t be helpful to us if the Supreme Court is weak as an institution. A strong Supreme Court is an important pillar of our democracy),” she said.
So I hope she will value the little time given to her),” Robredo said.
