LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Two small-scale miners died in a gas poisoning inside the tunnel in Itogon, Benguet, despite the suspension of mining activities due to continuous heavy rains by Habagat in the region.
Itogon Municipal Police Station identified the victim as Astrid Guitelen, 22, single, native of Bangaan, Sagada, Mt. Province and Jomar M. Lay-os 23, single, native of Fidelisan, Sagada, Mt. Province and both residing at 70 Antamok, Barangay Ucab, Itogon, Benguet.
An investigation said the victims entered the tunnel operated by Angie Ognayon at level 70 Antamok, Ucab, Itogon, Benguet, at Tuesday afternoon to fix their mine blower.
Companions said the victims stayed four hours inside the tunnel and failed to come out, prompting to follow them and found that both were at approximately 200 meters from the entrance lying on the ground.
They were retrieved by their companions and rushed at Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center but they were declared dead on arrival. The remains were brought home immediately by their relatives at their hometown.
