BAGUIO CITY — A man who slipped into a canal in the midst of Saturday’s heavy rains wrought by the “habagat” or southwest monsoon remains in Tuba, Benguet as search and rescue operations continued Monday.
The Baguio City Police Office identified the victim as Mencio Abol Amitem, 57, married, driver and resident of Pula, Poblacion, Tuba, Benguet.
Investigation showed that Amitem fell into a drainage canal and was swept by the strong current of water going down to Barangay Badiwan, Tuba around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night.
The driver of a Tamaraw FX was helping carry a box of groceries for two ladies when he slipped while crossing a footbridge and fell right into the open sewage canal, investigators said.
State of calamity
Meanwhile in the province of Rizal, a state of calamity has been declared by Mayor Tina Diaz in the municipality of San Mateo following the devastation caused by monsoon rains and flooding.
As of Monday noon, 6,956 families equivalent to 30,949 individuals were still being attended to at various evacuation centers located in Barangays Maly; Sta. Ana; Banaba; Dulong Bayan; Malanday; Guinayang; Guitnang Bayan 1 and 2; and Ampid 2.
In Cavite, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported no deaths as a result of the bad weather condition, but confirmed that 14 houses were destroyed in Tanza and 10 more in Cavite City. A total of 922 persons had to be evacuated from their inundated communities in Tanza and Noveleta. (With reports from Nel B. Andrade and Anthony Giron)
