Jasaan barangay chairman shot dead

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — An incumbent barangay chairman was shot dead, the first casualty for barangay level, in the series of killings of elected public officials.


PSupt. Surki Sereñas, spokesman of the Police Regional Office – 10, identified the victim as Alfredo Zapanta, barangay chairman of Danao, Jasaan town, Misamis Oriental.

Police report reaching the PRO-10, here said the victim was shot at around 5:40 a.m., Friday, at Purok 7, Barangay Danao.

The victim was rushed to Jasaan Hospital for medical treatment but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician, Sereñas said.

Misamis Oriental Gov. Bambi Emano condemned the killing of Zapanta who he said was a member of his political party PaDayon Pilipino, even as he expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.

Emano instructed PS/Supt. Rolando Destura, provincial police director of Misamis Oriental, to investigate the killing of the newly elected barangay chieftain by creating a task force to focus on the case.

Emano said he was saddened by the death of Zapanta and will discuss with the members of provincial peace and order council the possibility of providing funds as reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspect/s.

“Nasubo ko og maayo kay si Kapitan Alfredo Zapanta usa ka matarong, boutan nga kapitan nga andam na kaayong moserbisyo unta sa iyang katawhan” (I was really saddened because Kapitan Alfredo Zapanta was a righteous, kind chieftain who was so prepared to serve his constituents) but was shot dead,” Emano said

The Jasaan police reported that they received a call informing them that the barangay captain was shot by unidentified person/s. Personnel from the Municipal Police Station of Jasaan, led by PCI Rogelio Labor Jr., chief of police, immediately responded and proceeded to the area. The responding police personnel brought Zapanta to Jasaan Community hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The same report said the victim sustained gunshot wound on his head and his leg.

Emano said he will leave it up to the police to investigate the killing, and will not speculate on the motive as of this time.

“Daghan atong posibleng gilantaw pero dili nako pangunahan ang atong kapolisan kay nagpadayon pa sa imbestigasyon karon panahona (I can see many possibilities, but I don’t want to jump ahead of the police investigation,” he added.

Emano said he was supposed to meet Zapanta and seven other barangay chairmen later in the day (July 13), at Jasaan town.
