2,000 mahogany seedlings planted to kickstart environment month in Agusan del sur

ROSARIO, Agusan del Sur – The rank and file of a company, in full support of the local government unit officials and villagers in this province are showing their all-out support of the government’s month-long celebration of “Environment Month,”. The company planted 2,000 mahogany seedlings last week on their initial salvo of the environment month program within their host communities at Bayugan lll in Rosario town, Agusan del Sur.

On their opening salvo of environment month, the officials of the mining company also signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with local officials and village leaders here for an “Adopt-a-Creek” program at Wasian Creek, aiming to protect and preserve the environment and natural resources while also continue tree planting activity within the area.

The company also launched Eco Park (now tourism site), a former dam site already rehabilitated by the company, along with the villagers of the host communities.

“We are all very busy this month, all towards promoting environmental protection, preservation and sustainable development,” said in unison president Atty. Raul C. Villanueva and general and resident manager Engr. Ferdinand A. Cortes of Philsaga Mining Corporation (PMC) and the Mindanao Mineral Processing and Refining Corporation (M​​MPRC),on Friday.

The company is fully supporting the government’s Philippine Environment Month, the Philippine Eagle Week (June 4-10), the World Environment Day (June 5), the World Ocean’s Day (June 8), the DENR founding anniversary (June 10) and the Philippine Arbor Day (June 25), wherein many activities will also take place in support of the program, they said.

“Above all, we continue our tree planting activity not only within our concession area and host communities in the municipalities of Rosario and Bunawan but also in our neighboring areas,” Villanueva stressed in an interview with The Manila Bulletin.

To date, close to one million trees are already planted by the company in relation to their tree planting program the past 10 years including lauan, molave, mahogany, toog and rubber together with other fruit-bearing trees such as durian, lanzones and rambutan.

“Total reforested area to date is already 1, 157.16 hectares and part of this is the 571.57 hectares that support the government’s National Greening Program (NGP),” Cortes also said.

He said the company also planted 402 hectares of rubber trees within the area of the host communities.

“Aside from our tree-planting program that benefits the villagers and lumads (natives), the company is also extending livelihood and health support and scholarship to students in relation to the company education program to our host communities,” Cortes said.

The company is not only actively supporting the program of the government during ‘Environment Month’ but all through the years, he added.

The regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) based in Butuan City also lauded the officials of PMC and MMPRC for their “Adopt a Mangrove Project“ in Wakat, Barobo, Surigao del Sur, where many mangrove propagules were already planted along the coastal areas in the southern part of that province, in support of the DENR-Bunawan Community Environment and Natural Resources Office NGP’s program, it was learned.

The company, in support also of the Department of Education, is set to “Adopt-a-School” activity next month that added to their educational program for the host communities, it was further learned.
