CEBU CITY—Fifty-nine barangays in different towns and cities in Cebu were declared drug- free Tuesday by the oversight committee headed by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Central Visayas.

Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Office (CPADAO) Executive Director Ivy Meca released the list and she said that under the Dangerous Drugs Board, the declaration of barangays will undergo thorough validation.

Meca added that as of today there are already 244 barangays that were declared drug- free out of 1066 barangays in Cebu Province.

In Naga City, Sogod and San Remegio towns one barangay each was declared drug free while three barangays were cleared in Medellin town and four barangays in San Francisco Camotes Island and Oslob town, Meca said.

Municipality of Borbon had 18 barangays declared as drug free while Tabogon town had 16 barangays free of drugs.

According to Meca there were six requirements that barangays have to meet to be declared as drug free: non-availability of drug supply, absence of drug den, pusher, user, absence of clandestine drug laboratory, active involvement of barangay officials in anti-drug activities, existence of drug awareness, preventive education and information, existence of voluntary and compulsory drug treatment and rehabilitation processing desk.

Meca added that their role with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Department of Health (DOH) is to ensure that the 14 parameters set in the Barangay Drug Clearing Program are being followed by the village before the on-site validation.
