Besieged by drug smuggling, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) is determined to put up satellite offices in other international airports in the country in support of President Duterte’s war against illegal drugs.

In today’s press briefing, PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino said such move would enable them to prevent the entry of the banned substances in the country.

At present, PDEA has interdiction task forces at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Clark International Airport.

Aquino said the agency had seized illegal drugs coursed through “Manila and Clark’’ but admitted there are also contrabands brought in the country delivered by courier services in the airports in Davao, Cebu and other international airports in the country.

He said 200 new anti-drug agents who will be graduating from the PDEA Academy on June 14 will be assigned to man the interdiction task forces in Cebu and Davao.

Aquino reported that PDEA is also set to sign a memorandum of agreement with international and local courier services for this endeavor “in a week or two.”

At present, PDEA personnel are being trained by the Office of Transportation Security on how to manage x-ray machines to detect organic substances.

He added that the first batch was trained in February while the next one will be trained in late June.

“When we create this interdiction task force meron na kaming tao na magma-man nung x-ray machines (there will be agents assigned at the x-ray machines),” Aquino said.
