Catarman, Northern Samar – Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark A. Villar has vowed to fire corrupt officials in his department in Eastern Visayas.

Villar told Manila Bulletin he has created a team to investigate the numerous substandard and anomalous projects implementation in the first district of Northern Samar implemented by the DPWH regional office.

“I have created an investigating team and I will not hesitate to fire them,” Villar said in a brief statement during the groundbreaking last week of the P997-million Samar Pacific Coastal Project in Palapag, Northern Samar.

Among the projects that are being complained about are the road works along the San Isidro-Allen road in Northern Samar, the bridge in Catarman town and in the islands of San Antonio and San Vicente, all implemented by the DPWH regional office in Palo, Leyte under Regional Director Edgar Tabacon.

Tabacon admitted there were problems besetting various infrastructure projects in Northern Samar such as the weather conditions and poor planning.

He also announced that DPWH Northern Samar First District Engineer Ruel Umali wants to be relieved from his post in Catarman because of project implementation controversies.
