Zamboanga City – A policeman was arrested for extortion in an entrapment operation sprung by operatives of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Counter-Intelligence Task Force (CITF) and Special Action Force (SAF) at the Port of  Isabela City in  Basilan.

Chief Supt. Edwin de Ocampo, deputy regional director for administration of Police Regional Office 9 (PRO9), identified the apprehended policeman as PO3 Basie Alam, who was assigned at the PNP Maritime Group 9 and detailed at the Isabela Port Area.

De Ocampo said that the entrapment operation was carried out at around 3:15 p.m., Friday.

De Ocampo added that an agent of the CITF transacted with Alam wherein the suspect received the mark money without issuing any receipt in exchange for permission to travel to Basilan and this city.

The police said the entrapment operation against Alam was initiated after validating several complaints received by the CITF against  the policeman.

Based on the police report, a complainant reported to the PNP counter-intelligence office that there were some policemen who were allegedly extorting money from local shippers for amounts ranging from P500 to P1000.

The victims  claimed that the amount was needed for travel clearance, which is a requirement before shippers are allowed to board commercial vessel plying Isabela, Basilan  to  Zamboanga City.

De Ocampo said Alam is now under the custody of PNP CITF and was brought to Basilan Police  Provincial Office for documentation pending the filing of extortion case against him in court.
