In fact, PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde announced in a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City that the gunman who killed Mayor Ronald Lowell Tirol has already been identified by the police.

“We have already identified the gunman,” Albayalde confirmed but he refused to give further details so as not to jeopardize the pursuit operations of the ground troops.

Albayalde said the bodyguard of Tirol identified the gunman as the very same person who tried to kill the mayor three years ago.

The country’s top cop said they have yet to determine the motive behind the killing but noted the thorough probe leads toward the angle of politics.

Other angles are business-related and personal grudge, Albayalde said.

Tirol was shot dead inside the town’s cockpit arena by at least three suspects around 3:10 p.m. Sunday, including the lone gunman.

Two bullets to the head ended the life of the mayor, according to the PNP.

The gunman and his two cohorts immediately sped off onboard two motorcycles while Tirol was rushed to Dagonoy Hospital in Inabanga town where he was declared dead on arrival.
