Malacañang has few words for Liberal Party’s (LP’s) senatorial bets for the 2019 midterm elections.
On Monday, the Liberal Party revealed six named they are considering for the party’s “Resistance Slate”. Among the names were Senator Bam Aquino, Magdalo representative Gary Alejano, lawyer Jose Manuel Diokno, LP Vice President Erin Tañada, former Akbayan representative Barry Gutierrez, and actress Agot Isidro.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, on his Monday Palace press briefing, only had four words for the opposition and their potential senatoriables.
“Good luck to them,” Roque said.
When asked by Palace reporters if he had nothing more to add to the statement, Roque replied with: “‘Yun lang (That’s all).”
The potential senatorial slate was revealed by LP president Senator Kiko Pangilinan.
In an interview with ANC, Pangilinan said that the party is urging Isidro, a staunch critic of President Duterte, to run under the party’s slate next year.
He said he first brought up the idea in a meeting with Isidro about extra-judicial killings and Chinese encroachment in Philippine territory.
“Of course, she was hesitant. But then we said, precisely, that we need more women to step up and so she said, ‘Okay, you can consider it but let me think about it also. We’re still convincing her,” Pangilinan told ANC.
Isidro has been actively engaging with Duterte’s supporters in social media after the actress called the President a “psychopath” for his tirades against the US and the European Union.
Meanwhile, Pangilinan said that they had offered a slot to former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas but initially declined. However, he said LP is still trying to convince Roxas who lost to Duterte during the May 2016 Presidential race.
