Rap and urban music, James Reid dominate 2018 MYX Music Awards

Music channel Myx held its annual MYX Music Awards in grand style a few days ago at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Already on its 13th year, it honored the best music videos of the past year with nary a hitch.

The “MMA's,” as it's now called, also recognizes the people behind these works most especially the director, the creative team, and, of course, the artist.

This year was dominated by James Reid who got five trophies for his work on his third solo album “Palm Dreams,” specifically for his singles “Cool Down” and “The Life.” These bagged him the Song Of The Year plum, then Artist Of The Year, Male Artist, and Music Video Of The Year. The last citation is a combined artist-and-director award, of which James' girlfriend Nadine Lustre got a nod for co-directing the video with Petersen Vargas. The singer-actress also took home a solo award for Music Video Guest Appearance for the same song. It would've been a perfect night for the two except that they weren’t present at the awards show.

But their absence were inconsequential, at least every time a hot act was on stage -- and MYX made sure there were plenty. The opening production number set the tone as it included a lot of buzz artists alongside established stars. They are John Roa, Keana Valenciano, Ylona Garcia, Darren Espanto, X-Factor winner Marlisa, Klarisse De Guzman, Elmo Magalona and Janella Salvador.

MYX has always been equal opportunity when it comes to genres, but it’s undeniable Pinoy rap music is this year's flavor.Ex-Battalion raised the party a notch with a spirited version of their hit “Hayaan Mo Sila.” Shanti Dope's hit “Nadarang” which he performed with Gloc 9 and Inigo Pascual pumped up the crowd like crazy.

IV Of Spades is also one hot act. They took home a pair of trophies for Bandarito Performance OTY and the New Artist Of The Year. Now a member short, the remaining IV Of Spades nonetheless rocked the MMA's with a scorching version of their hit “Mundo.”

The ladies got even distribution of those grey TV heads (the color and shape of the MYX trophies).

Sarah Geronimo is Female Artist Of The Year. She won alongside Yeng Constantino in the Collaboration Of The Year category on the former's song (but written by the latter) “Kaibigan Mo.”

Streaming giant Moira Dela Torre took home Mellow Video OTY honors for “Malaya.” And KZ Tandingan aced the Media Soundtrack OTY for “Two Less Lonely People In The World” from last year's hit movie “Kita Kita” (Empoy presented); and for the Urban Video OTY nod for the Kean Cipriano-directed video for her song “Labo.”

Martin Nievera was accorded this year's MYX Magna Award.

MYX brought back their popular VJs from the past for the 13th version of their awards show. They include Heart Evangelista-Escudero, Luis Manzano, Iya Villania, Nikki Gil, Chino Lui Pio, and Bianca Roque-Brandner. They presented at different points of the show alongside current VJs Robi Domingo, Sunny Kim, Inigo Pascual, and Donny Pangilinan.

Other stars who graced the awards were Jay R, Jona, Julie Ann San Jose, rap group Mid Nasty, Shehyee, Ann B. Mateo, Donnalyn Bartolome, Julian Trono, Ella Cruz, Leanne & Narra, Keiko Necesario, Sassa, Volts Vallejo, Brit pop artist HRVY, and The Juans.
