Iloilo City — At least 200 residents of two villages in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, have returned home after a clash between government troops and the New People’s Army (NPA) earlier in the week.

Capt. Eduardo Precioso Jr., spokesman of the Philippine Army 3rd Infantry Division (3ID), said the evacuees returned to their homes in Buluangan and Quezon villages last Thursday.

Troops from the 79th Infantry Battalion (79 IB) were on patrol when they encountered NPA rebels in neighboring Guadalupe village. The two groups traded fire before the rebels fled in different directions.

The government troops were deployed in Guadalupe after the villagers complained that the rebels were extorting them.

The residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure. During the more than two-day evacuation, the government of San Carlos provided them with basic assistance.
