President Duterte enjoined members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to rally behind their new chief Director General Oscar Albayalde as he assured them that the former Metro Manila police chief is a good choice.
Duterte made the statement during the PNP Change-of-Command Ceremony and Retirement Ceremony for retired Director General Ronald dela Rosa in Camp Crame Thursday afternoon.
Duterte, in his short speech, reiterated that he chose Albayalde because the PNP needs a strict leader. He meanwhile told the newly installed PNP chief that he was chosen because of his credentials.
“You do not owe anybody anything for what you achieved; it’s your credentials,” the President told Albayalde.
“He is a good choice, I assure you,” Duterte addressed his audience.
The President also expressed confidence that Albayalde can help him build a better society.
“I am confident that through his leadership, we can further build our gains and create a just and harmonious society,” Duterte said of Albayalde.
Duterte earlier revealed that he chose Albayalde even though there were so many recommendations for the post.
“Actually, there are suggestions aplenty. But I choose the right guy for the position. Albayalde to me is the right guy for the moment. So siya ‘yun (that’s him),” Duterte told reporters in Davao City last week.
When asked what he saw in Albayalde that he did not see in other candidates who are from Davao City, Duterte explained that being from the same hometown is not always the factor.
“It only happened for Bato because pasok ako una (I was starting my presidency back then). I need men that I could really trust. Pero ‘yung (But), as I go along, rambled on to the remaining years of my presidency, [if] it belongs to the right person for the right moment. That’s the only consideration,” Duterte explained.
“I do not listen to politicians about their recommendations. Hindi ko hinahaluan ng pulitika ‘yan. ‘Yang military pati pulis (I do not mix politics with the affairs of the military and the police),” he added.
The President earlier said that he is leaving the matters in the PNP to Albayalde. However, he advised him to pick the guys he trusts in order to run the PNP more effectively.
“I’m addressing myself to the rest of the guys. Alam mo (You know), I do not micromanage. The best way to support you, I’m telling the military and the police right now is choose the men that can help you because you are the one who has the problem for the police and the military to secure the country, preserve the nation, protect the people,” he said.
“Trabaho ninyo ‘yan eh. So bakit ako makialam (That is your job so why should I interfere)? You would know best what is good for… For after all, we only have one nation,” he added.
According to Duterte, the PNP should keep in mind that every decision they make will directly affect the entire nation.
“You mess up with your work, dali ta lahat Pilipino (then we all fall down). Then I would say to you: Is that the way how you treat your country? Is that the way how you serve your country?” he said.
