Davao City – The city government of Davao is putting up an all-gender restroom at the SangguniangPanlungsod (SP)building to accommodate members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.
Acting Mayor Bernard Al-ag said the facility will prevent discrimination against the sector.
Recently, a woman reportedly found herself in an argument with a transexual woman who used the ladies’ room to relieve herself.
Technically, it is illegal to discriminate against any Dabawenyo, with the anti-discrimination ordinance recently passed by the city government.
However, the city government has not yet released its implementing rules and regulations.
The law states that Dabawenyos may not discriminate against anyone based on their gender, religion, life status, among others.
Al-ag said that the SP should serve as the avenue for the LGBT community to express their gender preference without being discriminated against.
“We are just finalizing the signage, anytime next week we will launch it. It will be placed on the ground floor,” Al-ag said.
“Following our anti-discrimination ordinance, it will be an opportunity for the LGBT community not to be discriminated against with this all-gender comfort room,” Al-ag said.
