Comelec to public: COC filing is free

Filing of the Certificates of Candidacy is free.

The Commission on Elections issued this reminder to the public after monitoring complaints from citizens of incidences of candidates being charged for filing COC.


Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez said other reports indicate that the charges are allegedly for “notarial services.”

“The filing of COCs is free; filers should not – repeat, NOT – be charged any amount. The notarial service being rendered by COMELEC field officials is likewise free of charge,” he said in a statement.

Jimenez asked the public to report such incidences of extortion to the COMELEC thru the following numbers: (02) 5270821 and (02) 5259296.

He said citizens may also file their incident reports through the COMELEC’s social media accts – @COMELEC on twitter, and on Facebook.

The period for the filing of COC for the May 14 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls started April 14.

As of April 15, the number of COC filers nationwide already reached 80,748 or 54,592 male and 26,156 female.

Total COCs filed for Barangay Elections is at 60,992 while for SK Elections 19,756.

The filing of COC will end on April 20.
