The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has prioritized the cleanup of the Estero De Binondo after photos of the waterway teeming with trash went viral on social media a few months ago.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim, together with the officials of Barangay 287 Zone 27 District III in Manila, led the cleanup drive at the estero Estero near Juan Luna Street.

“I want to remind the public that esteros are not trash bins so we have to exercise discipline and stop throwing our garbage there,” the MMDA chairman stressed.

Using cranes, personnel from the agency’s Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office removed floating trash and plants to declog the vital waterway.

Aside from clogging up waterways, Lim likewise stressed that piles dumped on the estero adversely affect the capacity of pumping stations to pump out floodwaters.

Lim, however, assured that the four pumps at the nearby Binondo pumping station is working well and is prepared for the incoming rainy season.

“Our dredging operations in the area will continue to maintain cleanliness of Estero de Binondo and nearby waterways,” Lim said.
