Camp Garcia, Cavite — A 46-year-old man and his two little children were killed in an hour-long fire that razed their house in a subdivision in General Trias City, this province, early yesterday.

Firefighters have retrieved the charred remains of Gerymil M. Labitag, an electrician; and his children – Gerymilee, 2; and Gerymaya Kent, 1 – in a totally burned room of their bungalow-type house in Parklane Subdivision, Barangay San Francisco.

What is more tragic is that police said the fire might have been intentionally set by the children’s father.

PO1 Ronald Barbuco Didal and SPO1 Fruelan Mendeja Manic, case investigators, said the fire started at 2 a.m., right after Gerymil had a quarrel with his common-law wife, Clarita Boca de Vega, 37.

De Vega, probers said, admitted that they had a quarrel and that Gerymil threatened her and her seven-year-old daughter with harm before locking himself up with his two children in one of the rooms.

At this juncture, De Vega rushed out of the house and sought the help of barangay tanods (village watchmen) in the area.

Witnesses told police that when barangay watchmen arrived to intervene, Labitag was overheard as saying: “Sa kabilang buhay na lang tayo mag-usap (Let’s talk it out in the afterlife!).”

Firefighters from General Trias Fire Station said that the house was already on fire when they came.
