Unlike the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan which already has an initial senatorial lineup for the 2019 elections, the Liberal Party has yet to decide who will be included in its slate.

It remains to be seen if LP could even complete a 12-member slate.

“Mayroong mga pangalan na sina-suggest, pero kailangan kasing i-vet ito. Iyong pagdedesisyon, pagdedesisyunan ng board—hindi puwedeng ako lang (There were names suggested, but they need to be vetted. The decision comes from the board—not only from me),” Vice President Leni Robredo, LP chair, said.

Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, president of LP, will form the board which will finalize the list of senatorial candidates joining the political opposition for next year’s elections.

He called the opposition slate, “The Resistance,” with only Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV so far as the sure candidate.

Asked if LP would field a full slate for the 2019 senatorial elections, Robredo responded: “Iyon iyong hindi natin sigurado kasi kaunti na lang iyong natira sa LP ngayon (That is we are not sure of since only a few are left with LP).”

Robredo, the highest-ranking woman in government, said the LP is still in the process of looking for “qualified” senatorial candidates who “embody the ideals of the party.”

Once the ruling party, the LP has now lost most of its members to President Rodrigo Duterte-backed PDP-Laban.

While the LP is set to form a coalition and its own slate, Robredo highlighted the importance of having a “genuine opposition” even if a popular President like Duterte leads the country”.

“Mahalaga iyong genuine opposition para maging buo iyong tenets ng demokrasya. Hindi puwedeng may demokrasya na lahat sang-ayon sa namumuno (A genuine opposition is important in order to complete the tenets of democracy. We can’t have democracy, where everybody agrees with the leader),” the LP chair said.
