Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. said private contractors implementing infrastructure projects of the provincial government are short of sand and gravel.

Defensor said the contractors fear that without sand and gravel. government infrastructure projects might be delayed or temporarily halted.

The governor issued an executive order last year stopping the issuance of new permits to contractors that wanted to extract sand and gravel from major river systems.

He enforced the ban after a team from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA-6) found that bridges could be damaged because of excessive quarrying along rivers.

The Iloilo Provincial Environment Office is also studying the possibility of undertaking quarrying at mountainous areas as an alternative.
