Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro – A businessman was shot dead by a still unidentified assailant early Tuesday morning in Baco town proper.

Superintendent Imelda V. Tolentino,  public information officer of the Police Regional Office-Mimaropa (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) identified the victim as Derick C. Hidalgo,  34, a resident of Poblacion, Baco.

The police said he is a relative of the vice mayor of Baco.

Initial investigation disclosed that at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, while Hidalgo was near the entrance of his restaurant, two men aboard a red motorcycle pulled over.

The backrider later shot the victim at close range.  The duo fled after the shooting.

Hidalgo died on the spot.

Tolentino said the driver of the motorcycle was wearing a white shirt and his face was covered with white handkerchief while the shooter was wearing a black shirt.

Police said the victim had business dealings with the municipality as its official caterer.  His neighbors claimed that he had no known enemies.
