General Santos City – A detained carnapping gang leader, who escaped from jail nine days ago, was killed, while a wounded companion managed to escape after they decided to shoot it out with the police which had moved in to recapture them yesterday in Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat.

Andy Evangelista sustained gunshot wounds in the body and died on the way to the hospital, after he was reportedly left behind by his wounded companion Oting Mando in a sugarcane plantation in Barangay Balagsikan yesterday.

Evangelista and Mando, who is facing illegal drugs charges, bolted the South Cotabato provincial jail last January 15.

According to Sultan Kudarat Police Director Sr. Supt. Raul Supiter, Evangelista and Mando were about to steal a motorcycle in front of a bar in downtown Tacurong City when police officers accosted them.

The suspects reportedly engaged the authorities in a gun fight, and were already hit in the initial exchange of gun fire. But they were still able to flee onboard the motorcycle.

The lawmen gave chase until they reached the sugarcane plantation in Barangay Balagsikan where they found the bloodied Evangelista. He was apparently left behind by Mando, who went on to make good his escape onboard the stolen motorcycle.

Police are still hot on the trail of Mando.
