MANILA, Philippines — Just about everyone has been praising Nonito Donaire to high heavens that he seems to be like Superman.

But like Clark Kent’s fabled alter-ego, “Donaire is not invincible,” Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., who faces the Filipino for the world super-bantamweight crown this Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

“I will come up with a surprise,” Vazquez Jr. told the Puerto Rican media. “I will be (Donaire’s) kryptonite.”

Vazquez Jr. is in the final phase of his training and believes he has to knock Donaire out to win the fight, suspecting that Top Rank, would not allow Donaire to lose.

“I have to take the fight to win. I think I will have to knock him out,” said Vazquez, who parades a 21-1-1 win-loss-draw card with 18 knockouts.

Donaire, sporting a 27-1 slate, also with 18 knockouts, is best remembered for his one-punch knockout wins over Vic Darchinyan of Australia and Fernando Montiel of Mexico but was unimpressive in his last fight against Omar Narvaez of Argentina.

Top Rank chief Bob Arum has grand plans for Donaire this year and the 80-year-old Harvard-educated lawyer that will line him up with Mexican gunner Jorge Arce in May or June.

“Nonito wants to fight four times this year,” said Arum, noting that he can give him fights in September and in December if he keeps on winning. —Nick Giongco
