Australia Day

January 25, 2012, 10:51pm

MANILA, Philippines — Previously known as Anniversary Day and Foundation Day, today is the celebration of Australia day. This event remembers the landing of the First Fleet in Port Jackson in 1788.

Various events are held to celebrate Australia Day, including festivals, fireworks, outdoor concerts, community barbeques, and sports competitions.

Australia-Philippines relations have always been cordial and mutually beneficial, especially because of their common membership and contributions to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation. Trade, education exchange, and investment have been active between the two countries.

Total official development assistance from Australia to the Philippines is around A$118.1 million (around R4.7 billion) for 2010-11, making Australia as one of the top aid donors to the Philippines. The Australian aid program is in three primary areas: economic growth, basic education, and national stability and human security.

We greet the people and government of Australia led by Their Excellencies, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Governor General Quentin Bryce, and Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and its Embassy headed by H.E., Ambassador Rod Smith, on the occasion of its Australia Day. We wish them the best and success in all their endeavors. CONGRATULATIONS!
