Big Chill, Freego seek finals seats
Games Thursday (Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig City)
2 p.m. — NLEX vs Big Chill
4 p.m. — Cebuana Lhuillier vs Freego
MANILA, Philippines — Underdogs Big Chill and Freego seek to forge an unlikely finals duel when they go for a sweep Thursday in Game 2 of the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup best-of-three semifinals at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Superchargers, coming off a massive victory in the series opener, battle the heavily-favored North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) at 2 p.m. while the Jeans Makers take on Cebuana Lhuillier in the second game at 4 p.m.
If both or either teams fail to complete a sweep, a deciding third game will be held on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Despite an 83-66 win, a margin nobody expected to happen against a team loaded with member of the Philippine team, Big Chill coach Arsenio Dysangco is not letting his squad waste this precious opportunity.
"We have to prepare against them mentally and emotionally because we have to keep them focus on playing to get that one more victory," said Dysangco, whose team dealt NLEX its lone elimination round defeat.
Jesse James Collado had 16 points and six rebounds while Jewel Ponferrada fell short of a double-double with nine points and 15 boards. Fil-Am Alex Mallari and Jerry Glorioso were also key in stopping the Road Warriors' rampage.
It was a nightmare of sorts for NLEX, which entered the game as heavy favorites having won eight straight and beating opponents by double-digits. But many are seeing a bounce back performance from the Foundation Cup champions.
Meanwhile, Freego is out to gain momentum from its 57-56 win over Cebuana in Game 1 that saw seldom-used Roider Cabrera hit a buzzer-beating three.
Cabrera's basket came after the Gems were on the verge of winning it thanks to back-to-back treys by Terrence Romeo only for Kevin Alas to commit an inbound miscue to enable the Jeans Makers to have another shot at it.
