Running the show

MANILA, Philippines — Every team needs a leader, one who can manage strong personalities, distribute work, and be the source of strength and stability for his or her teammates in times of conflict. The responsibilities of a leader increase even more when lives are on the line, both of the team members and of innocent civilians.
Such is the life of a superhero group’s leader. Today, I’ll be picking my top five comic book heroes that exemplify what it means to take charge.
DICK GRAYSON, A CHARMER
While many others have used fear to gain the respect of their people, Dick Grayson has always relied on his warmth and friendliness to create trust. Dick’s been the head honcho of the Teen Titans, Outsiders and the JLA. In all his teams, he has focused on being the nice guy, getting people to like him and trust him in any hairy situation.
He made the Teen Titans a family. He gave purpose to the Outsiders. He took care of the next generation of heroes in the JLA. Dick Grayson is a people-person, a charmer, and a symbol of eternal innocence. He will always be the go-to guy for the DC Universe.
STEVE ROGERS, BEACON OF JUSTICE AND FREEDOM
When it comes to experience, no leader comes even close to Steve Rogers and his resume of battles both fought and won. Steve Rogers led America against the Nazis during World War II. In the present day, he leads the Avengers against terrorists, aliens, and superpowered criminals bent on taking over the world.
He’s worked with all the greats, ranging from Namor and the original Human Torch all the way to modern heroes like Spider-Girl and Gravity. But all his history and all his allies don’t mean anything if you don’t take into consideration everything that he has stood for since the day of his inception. The Marvel heroes will forever see Steve Rogers as an invincible beacon of justice and freedom.
BARBARA GORDON, AMAZING BRAIN
In terms of personal turmoil, no leader has suffered more than Barbara Gordon. She was a totally unsuspecting victim of the Joker’s insanity. One day he knocks at the door, she opens it, and he shoots her mercilessly. With the bullet hitting her spine, Barbara lost all physical function waist-down, but that did not stop her from hunting down the scum of the DC Universe.
She led her Birds of Prey by taking control of the Internet, and becoming a master of all technology and digital information. She was able to guide the likes of Black Canary, Huntress and Big Barda in their missions as an all-knowing, all-seeing presence.
Now that she has regained the use of her legs, Barbara is back as Batgirl. This full use of her body only adds to the potency of her amazing brain. Gotham City’s villains better watch out.
SCOTT SUMMERS, THE ONLY MAN FOR THE JOB
It’s one thing to lead a team, but it’s a totally different thing to lead a whole race. That’s exactly what Scott Summers has had to do these past few years. During the Marvel mega-event, House of M, the Scarlet Witch depowered most of the mutants in the world.
What were left were less than 200 scared mutants, with no clue what to do or where to go next. Cyclops took everybody under his wing and created a Utopia for them, as they moved to their own island away from their homo sapien attackers.
It was never a role that Scott wanted, but everybody knew, himself included, that he was the only man for the job. Charles Xavier has always told him that he was one of the most powerful mutants in the world, not because of his powers, but because of his leadership.
And due to harsh circumstances, Cyclops was forced to turn a whole race into an army, even if it meant turning kids into soldiers. He had to make the difficult choices that nobody else would make. And he had to do all that while keeping his relationship with Emma Frost alive. And we all know how difficult she can be.
NAMOR, THE RIGHTFUL KING
Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and that crown is especially heavy when you’re ruling over more than two-thirds of the entire planet. Namor is the rightful king of Atlantis, and such a position consistently puts him at war with surface-dwellers who pollute the waters and invade his territory. While often seen as a violent war-freak, Namor is actually a dedicated warrior, whose only concern is to safeguard the lives of his aquatic citizens.
Some are born into leadership, while others reluctantly accept the position. Whatever the reason may be, a person who takes on the role of leader puts himself in the public eye, and right in everybody’s crosshairs. A big kudos to the comic book heroes who lead, endure, and survive through it all. And GOOD LUCK!
